I'm sure many players of Terratech feels the same,

That missions have something missing,

something that give these mission meaning,

something that make missions unique,

something tells the story of our offworld prospector and the world around them.

We've discussed the Legion and the end game crisis story in this Thread: Legion Brainstorming Thread - Blocks & Endgame Crisis

but the story in between are still empty,

so how about we have some brainstorming.

tonytony

Storyline mission:

All storyline mission are non-repeatable, but can be restart when fail or canceled, some mission require certain condition to trigger(licence level, biome discovered, compleat missions) , the reward often contain rare blocks and large amount of EXP & BB.

GSO Storyline example:

You start out as a apprentice under Crafty Mike's supervision,
he teach you things from the very basics and often support you with very useful parts,
when you reach the end of the storyline,
he will tell you that you've been a hard working student and you've learned everything you need,
he grant you your certificate and promises to be your mentor in your career.

have one of my old posts:

Hey guys, remember big tony? well, he was supposed to be A RECURRING RIVAL TECH.

hmm...

Big Tony

Start game tutorial; Teach players how to fight other techs; Present rival storyline
View attachment 26312
This shows that tony wants back at the player, maybe there should be a quest that involves saving him from another tech or finishing off, which makes a more story oriented questline?? (yeah im overthinking)

I think Crafty Mike is better with the main storyline because he teach you about the factory system and give you most of the parts for you to start yur own, Big Tony could be a good side story, play as your elder colleague.

Just putting the Legion story that I came up with together:

Legion Storyline:

Legion is a secret organization that holds many shady and mostly dangerous technology, their goal is to reach the ultimate wisdom of the universe,
their try to achieve it through their superior technology.

They have two different parties within the organization.

One party is so desperate to achieve the ultimate goal that they will do anything without hesitation, they want to install the unfinished, self developing artificial intelligence(which they think it's perfect) on their experimental quantum supercomputer(that can self upgrade by using nano drones) that's linked to their cyber network, which controls their self multiplying multi-purpose nano drone and all their shade techs.

The opposite party wants to be careful and prevent misuse when talking about their shade techs, they're against the idea of installing the unfinished, self developing artificial intelligence on their experimental quantum supercomputer.

The leader of the sane party(The Archpriest) wants to expand their influence within the organization, so they decide to search people with great potential to help their cause, and they found you, a person that not only have good reputation between those most powerful organizations, but shows great skill and determination(also very greedy), perfectly suitable for their purpose.

They sign contract with you, allowing you gain access to their technology, in exchange, you have to collect field data, suppress activities of the insane party, and wipe out spy and witnesses from other organization.

One day, the sane party received an info that the insane had done something to the system mainframe, and the thing that they worried for a long time have finally come true, those insane ones sneakily installed the AI.

The AI gone rogue with the whole drone network, although the sane ones had predicted this situation from long time ago, they still lose most of their members(at least the insane ones are all killed in the outbreak), knowing that if the situation not be solved or at least controlled, the AI will control the gray goo and devour the whole solar system. The survivor of Legion are struggle to seek help due to their shady activities and they see you as the last hope of this galaxy.

The survivor told you the situation and ask you to be the bridge to communicate with other organization, you've organize the meeting of all of the powerful organization in this galaxy, they can't believe that such thing had happened before you bring in the evidence, they decide to form alliance in order to deal with this crisis, so the new organization was born : Terratech

After you obtain the protection gear, you will get a scout mission to find the location of the super quantum computer(The Core) that have been took over by the evil AI.

You have found and tried to destroy The Core but it's not been successful due to it's protected by a very strong force field that even the Big Bertha can't penetrate, and have thick nano platings that been rapidly repaired by the gray goo.

You've reported this to Terratech HQ, they discussed the situation and agreed to allow the use of a type of weapon that's long been banned after the Third World War: weapons of mass destruction(Super weapons).

Since the Super weapons had long been banned, there's no existing ones that HQ can give you to use on The Core and you have to help them develop one from scratch, you have to do mission from mine resource to collecting data from the spawn of evil AI.

Finally the HQ came up with a unstable but at least usable prototype(mission only) for you to blow up The Core and its spawn of evil, the prototype works like a explosive joint, it's not very resistant to damage, the plan is to drive to The core and detonate the bomb, turn the place into a smoking crater, you are the only one who dare take on this suicide mission.

After you fight off hordes of drones and a massive Core Guardian, you detonate the bomb of mass destruction, you and your tech disintegrate along with The Core and its hell spawn in a blinding flash, you become a hero in the history of the galaxy.

Sike
You walked away while the mushroom cloud is in the background, like a legend:cool:

And now every corp have their unique super weapon available for you,
a seed of a new war had just been planted......
To Be Continued --->

As mentioned earlier, I would love to see something that would give the player a reason to start over again.

Below is my musings of how I could see a story mode be added to Terra Tech.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back Story:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<<Queue TerraTech Exploration Music>>

The year was 2088, and humanity was in a bind. Its resources were dwindling and the population was still growin

To counter the crisis, humanity started to explore within its own solar system for new sources of raw materials. With the discovery of the sub-light engine, it opened this new frontier to Governments, Private Sectors, Entrepreneurs and Prospectors alike, marking the last resource rush of the 21st Century.

Within the next few years, all available natural resources within the system were either claimed or controlled. The only exception were the distant stars, where resource rich planets could be found but still remained out of reach.

Today, except those privileged few, humanity is forced to eke out a menial existence. No longer are there new frontiers, where one can risk it all in order to make it big.

Until now.

<<Queue Terratech Battle Music>>

Now that humanity has entered the next great age with the advent of FTL Drive, Citizens now have the opportunity to gain immeasurable wealth by piloting the modular, multi role, customisable machine known as the “Terra Tech” on planets unknown.

As your reputation grows, so will your opportunities to further increase your wealth by offering your skills to any number of Corporations out i the far reaches

Stake your claim now, the frontier awaits !

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Modes:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sandbox Mode:

Basically the campaign mode that we currently enjoy with no end conditions to work towards.
The only alteration I would like to see if a difficulty setting which controls the strength / size of the enemies.

Story Mode:
You start out as a Citizen desperate to make a name for yourself on the new frontier. The money would also be welcome. Because you do not have enough credits to pay for the Prospecting licence from any other Corporation, you sign on with the GSO who will employ anyone so long as they graduate "Boot Camp"

The first mission is the simple tutorial aka "Boot Camp". The endgame to this mission is to make X number of block bucks, problem is, there is only 1 vacancy and GSO dropped you and 100 other new "trainees" onto the planet they call Kodoku.

Needless to say you graduate and from there you are into the main game where you are offered a variety of missions. The missions vary with different end game criteria, enemy corporations encountered and the main type of biomes on the planet.

Note: when you finish a mission all the blocks you collected remain on planet as they are property of the respective corporations. However you will be compensated for their value.

After a few more missions, you will then decide/forced to go freelance where you can use your credits to purchase upgrades such as starting tech and licence levels for different corporations.

At this point you can weave in any overarching story missions here. Evil Legion Overlord, Better Future Assimilation, Reticule Research Redux etc.

Mission Types:
To make the missions work, scripted assets/story components will be needed. Here are a few examples of what might make interesting missions.

Increase Company Holdings - <<Insert Employer Corp here>> have started to expand here on <<insert Planet Name>> We need you to capture and hold <<Insert number here>> trading stations for several days so we can secure our market share.

In this example - the Trading Stations will need to be able to be captured by anchoring an AI cab nearby. To make life difficult for the player enemy techs from opposing factions will attack. So when you place your AI cab down, you will need to include some defences. This introduces a new mission time where a trading station you have recently captured will come under attack. You have X minuted to get there and have to defend it for y seconds.

Hostile Takeover - <<Insert Enemy Corp here>> have entrenched themselves here on <<insert Planet Name>> giving them the monopoly of <<random mineral>> exports. We need you to convince <<Enemy Corp>> that it is in their best interest to find a new market.

Clear and simple. Somewhere on the map thee is a BIG concentration of Enemy tech and some key set pieces. (Also throw in a few invaders for good measure) All the player has to do is destroy it all ! For an increase in difficulty, if the player is chased off, some of the invaders re spawn.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The downside to all this, more than a few changes are required to make the story work.

Anyways - hope you enjoyed the read.

like your idea of letting trading post serve more purpose then just a shop and mission board, a capture point for missions is a great idea.
maybe we can introduce turf war in terratech,

However, I don't think your idea can serve as storylines, you basically give a background for the turf war between factions, not a storyline for any faction,

but still, turf wars are cool

My suggestion is an introduction of groups of AI controlled techs. I have put together a small list of possible groups as well as their estimated behaviour.
These would add some more liveliness to every storyline!
434 Escort fleet - provides escorts to small crafts and/or groups of crafts. Mainly encountered in groups of 3-6 vehicles. Initially neutral to you, until you fire at them or at their VIP.
25 Geomapping division - small crafts carrying radars and some scientific equipment. Lightly armed, small to medium size. Usually accompanied by 434 Escort fleet. Behaviour - roam aimlessly, sometimes drilling for samples. Initially neutral.
3 Mining Fleet "Rock Feeders" - A collection of vessels tasked to clearing out rocks and drilling for resources. Big techs are armed and can be encountered both alone and in fleets. Smaller ones are only seen in fleets with escort. Either Neutral or Territorial(will attack when approached)
5 Logging Fleet "LawnMovers" - A fleet clearing out dense forests. Usually armed with buzzsaws and flails. Encountered only in woodland regions, often with escort. Behaviour - viciously drills for fiberwood and resin. Same, euther neutral or territorial.
1 Racing Channel - a division of a galactic Media group, specialising in rallys and daredevil stunts. Its techs are designed for speed and are armed very lightly. Upon attack though, their escorts will land nearby and attempt to protect them. Usually found racing and/or filming a battle.
"Adrenaline Rush" tourist agency - from the trailer, "Sells adventure to a highest bidder". Initially neutral, yet some techs might attack you.
4 Joint Escort fleet "Watchdogs" - Heavily armored and armed escort crafts. Only encountered as a company to other crafts.
N-7 brigade "Hammer of Dawn" - Military brigade, reporting directly to HE officials. Mainly used in establishing footholds and for assault operations. Also guard main HE bases. Almost always hostile.
21 Black Ops regiment "Wraiths of War" - Conducting off-the-radar operations. Uses both HE and non-HE crafts. Behaviour highly varies.
31 Logistics divison "Box cutters" - Tasked with supplying HE crafts. Heavily armored transporters. If reputation is below threshold, are hostile - yet do not attack you, just call for backup and flee.
The futher expansion of lore systems may include:
1) Reputation system. The better the corp reputation is - the more are the discounts, and the bigger are the rewards. Reverse is also true here! If reputation is bad - prices increase, and the rewards are cut short.
2) Bounty system - A corp you have bad reputation with may set a bounty. If you don't pay it off on a trading station, techs will periodically come and attack you.

The turf war was just an example of a mission type that could be used to tell a story (mainly because I had run out of characters ;))

What I was hoping to demonstrate was how you could give the player a reason to restart again on another planet as you tell the story.

As I mentioned earlier - once you go freelance (i.e being able to start as any faction you like) any of the story mission(s) mentioned by other people would become available to the player to either ignore or follow as they wish.

Because ultimately - what I am trying to capture is one of the best things about Terra tech, the Fun / Enjoyment / Challenge of fighting your way from the bottom of the heap to the top of the food chain.

As a bad analogy - its like reading a book. Yes you have read a page of words and the next page will also have words for you to read through. But the author has structured those words in such a way that you feel compelled to go to the next page and the next because you want to find out what happens next.

like your idea of letting trading post serve more purpose then just a shop and mission board, a capture point for missions is a great idea. maybe we can introduce turf war in terratech,
I forgot to mention that in my ideas the Trading Stations now belonged to a new group. They just need a catchy name e.g:
- Guild of Off-world Traders (GoOT)
- Guild of Trading and Commerce (GoTaC)

Just need to think of a catchy name :)

Yeah your right, I think I was expecting main storylines for each faction, a serie of event that's sequenced to build a timeline towards the ending of the whole story.

but these background story are perfectly suit the style of each faction,

Indeed, I am hoping Payload and or the Community flesh out the back stories of each of the Corporations

Also I hope they can explain why you get XP when you destroy techs from that Corporation (you would think they would penalise you). The only way I was able to weave that part of the game into any logical mission / story was a "hunger games" theme.

I think XP is just a representation of your reputation and contribution within that cooperation, you gain access permit by increase contribution

And I don't think TT is about hunger game, is just because it's in the edge of human's expansion, so the authority have not gain much control over the area, thus many outlaws roaming around and many of them were offworld prospectors like you, so it make sense that they have the technology that you have.

HawkEye Storyline:

Sergeant Smash's squad had been ordered to secure an area on this planet along with other squad for Hawkeye operation in the near future, unfortunately, not long after their arrival, they've been caught in a severe EMP storm cause by an unknown source(maybe cause by Reticule Research, Legion or Alien activity)

The communication with HQ and other squad had been cut off, and Smash had been separated from his squad member because the ambush of the armed bandits, he was completely on his own, when he finally restore hse communication, he still not able to contact his comrade.

HQ had tell him that some other squads had gone rogue and they have no choice but to order Smash to pull out from the planet, but Smash refused, he's not going to leave until he find his comrade no matter they're still alive or already dead, HQ has finally convinced by Smash and give him one last chance, "Using whatever you got to secure the area and rescue the remaining squad members", HQ will no longer support this operation, if this fail, Smash will be heavily punished for disobeying orders.

Sergeant Smash desperately searching for his lost comrade while wiping out count less bandit outpost, when he finally found one of his comrade, there's only a pile of smoking debris left, and a lone offworld prospector that seems to had avenged his comrade for him.

He saw the potential inside this person and he made his decision, he wants to recruit this person, teach this person the tactics of survival in a war zone, and train this person in order to help him complete the mission.

You, as an offworld prospector, had fought your way using your sense of combat till this day, had never been trained with real combat tactics, had starting to struggle as the enemies you're facing got stronger and stronger, you think it's time to learn some real deal skills and knowledge about the battle field.

You accepted the offer form Smash because of you're thirsty for knowledge and skills(Also money and gears), from now on you are a rookie under Smash's command, you're ordered to wipe out enemy outpost, securing areas, escorting survived members and finding trace of other squad.

After you only have the last member to find, Smash received an info that the last member had been held hostage inside a fortification constructed by the rogue Hawkeye member.

Smash had a plan for this seige, he will act as a decoy, attacking enemy base at the front with heavy firepower while you sneak in from the back and blow up their armory, the situation seems go as planned until you realized they've already know your plan and had guarded the armory with heavy troops, you and Smash have no choice but to fight for your life.

After you fight off the enemy forces you and Smash found out that this betrayal are all planned by the last member, he sold his comrade in order to become a warlord in this planet.

Smash arrest the traitor and send him to court-martial, he now sees you not only a worthy soldier, but one of his best comrade that have fight alongside with him.

A nice storyline! Yet I have several questions and suggestions.

First of all, I highly doubt that HQ would allow this to happen. If the storm had happened, after Smash has restored the comms - the most likely order would be either evac(as you said) or to wait for reinforcements.

Moreover, disobeying orders would most likely force HQ to declare Smash rogue and send troops to deal with everybody including him.

Finally, choosing to train a person is ... controversial.
1) Why would you trust him?
2)Why would he trust you?
3)It usually takes years and years to train a good soldier - I do not even think about Black Ops operative here - so training a rookie into a skilled combatant is unlikely.

However, those are just my thoughts. And I love the original scenario! Thank you,@eddie for this idea!

1 and 2 hq could have seen his this planet as a danger and not wanted to send more down with the risk of more storms

3 he's already seen what houve got, and that you may be his final option

First of all, Smash is one of the most respected veteran and the best squad leader in Hawkeye, the Hawkeye HQ wants to trust Smash's decision but had to be fair, so that's why they give his one last chance and had to cut off supports.

For your last point, since the supports had been cut off, he need all the help he can get, also, in Hawkeye's policy, it's allowed to recruit and train personal on site if the field command think it's necessary, since Smash have the experience and authority to do that, he will use this as his advantage, also when he sees you defeat the rogue Hawkeye soldier that killed one of his comrade, he wants to thank you for avenge his comrade, so he train you how to fight like a soldier.

I'm thinking of the name of the achievement that you get if you complete the main storyline of each cooperation, let me know if you got better ones.

GSO: Graduated Surveyor

GeoCorp: Mining Site Inspector

Venture: Grand Champion

Hawkeye: Spec Op Officer

Better Future: Top.1 Customer

Space Junkys: Space Age Tomb Raider(I'm thinking of they also raid alien ruins for junks and artifacts)

Reticule Research: King of Lab Rats

Legion: Galatic Saviour
