Speaking of small techs, in my older techs I built an "Escape Pod" which I could detach and fly if my tech ever got damaged to the point where it's unable to defend itself. The pod's cab was the controlling cab for the tech, and was held in the middle of the tech and connected by brackets. It also had a shield and repair bubble incase an enemy landed a shot in there. In one of my heavily armored techs, I put a tiny car inside. When I disconnected it though, the remains of my tech fell and were scattered around me so I was unable to escape. And this is why all of your escape vehicles should fly.
