First, we've got Steam.
It has an option to (as I know) VAC protect servers in steam games, essentially somewhat protecting them from hacks. But there is a big minus to it: false reports and (mostly bug-related) misconceptions. If you get banned in one game's VAC protected servers, you can't play on any VAC servers. So if there will be an official server, it shouldn't be protected by VAC. Many popular games have highly skilled players who may seem that they are cheating when they are just good/lucky and get VAC-banned for it. Don't misunderstand me, it should have some kind of anti-cheat (3rd-party software won't work because TT is so glitchy it may screw with it), but I've heard that getting VAC-ed is not that hard.
Then, how will servers work?
Official and unofficial servers? Official servers should always be up. What about R&D? How will they play together? Maybe password-protect some servers? Ability to make/host our own with options (like day-night cycle, enemy spawns, tech persistence, etc.)? How will tech persistence work? Griefer's artillery will win if it's an open server with persistence. What will happen if you build over an already built base if the person logs back on if persistence is disabled? Will every tech be loaded in and working or only ones near the "working" radius of players?
An official Kingdom Server?
How will the territory mechanism work? Alliance options? Maybe it should be password protected to prevent trolls coming in? Maybe only give the key to trusted forum users (Me, @QuackDuck, @Lord_Chaos, @JimmyBlether, etc.)
Gamemodes?
Should competitive (so not story, creative and R&D) gamemodes have limited blocks? Story mode, Creative mode, R&D, Capture The Flag (CTF), Tag, King Of The Hill, Last Tech Standing, plain, stunt, gauntlet or flying Racing (techs pass through each other), Team Death Match (TDM), maybe Hockey if you won't fix the resource block slipperiness for colored ice?
Updates?
Only stable versions or all versions? Maybe only tested versions with high stability? Should servers auto-update or do it manually?
Conclusion:
Multiplayer has to wait. Maybe only introduce the "Hunger Games" mode you're discussing now or the one that you showcase in your streams (no power and limited blocks)? People will not like multiplayer even if it's fixed if it comes out half-done (looking at you, EA) or poorly made. It's about everyone, or all buyers and their negative reviews, potentially causing less income, firings, or in the worst case:
TERRATECH IS DOOMED.
You can't give out multiplayer unfinished. Do not rush with it. Look at No Man's Sky. Do not become them.
All it takes is one unfinished game feature between real multiplayer and development stopping. Make your choice.
