The suggestion is in the name. When holding over a known block in the inventory or the shop and holding a specific key (Default: Left Shift?) a popup box displays the ingredients required to make it at the tip of the cursor.

There are then 2 possible ways to make the log more or less automatic:
1) If you know of a block you also know the recipe.
2) To learn the recipe you must either craft or scrap one of the block.

And finally, provide an option to retain the recipe list between games.
When launching a new game you get a selection-box (Default: No) with the options to "Copy all previously discovered recipes", "Copy recipes that I discovered in [SELECT SAVE FILE]" or "No: Start Over".
Copying the recipes would allow you to see the recipe in game, even on undiscovered blocks, thus removing some of the randomness from the block discovery system.

I totally forgot about the Blockpedia that is being worked on.
This thread is utterly redundant as the Blockpedia will almost certainly contain a recipe catalog of some kind.
Sorry folks.
