Do you think popup notifications are a good thing in game?

Hey everyone, I wanted to take a couple of minutes to talk to everyone about immersion and the new notifications we are getting in game.

I enjoy playing my games. I enjoy reviewing them, talking about them and working with them. But It's really hard to work on projects (or even really enjoy the game properly) when BING! ...Your immersion is broken every so often by notifications.

There are other games that do notifications really very well, so it's not impossible to integrate if it's what you want to do. One that springs to mind is Planetary Annihilation. They have announcements, a blog and twitch live streams all within the startup screen (all on the right):

Do you know why this is a good thing? Because when I'm playing the game I'm not being bugged or distracted by things I may or may not be interested in. I mean, I'm not playing Farmville here!

I'd love to get everyone elses opinion on this, I may not be right in thinking this but it's how I feel. Please feel free to voice your opinions in this thread.

I'm none too bothered about the in-game stream notification at the moment.
Pretty certain it won't be a permanent thing, but I agree it's an eyesore when you're trying to play.

Fair enough, duly noted.

What we are trying to achieve is the promotion of other people who are streaming TerraTech to those who are currently playing the game. Meaning a bigger audience for those streaming the game, and a wider awareness of other parts of the game or the community around the game for those playing it.

Perhaps this should be limited to the menu screens (pause and main).

Or would a dismiss function be suitable? How many people does this bother in a significant way? Do any of you like being notified?

Thanks,
Kris

I would prefer only in pause and main as the game itself is already hectical enough and the screen should be clean.
But in pause I don't care for the screen as the game is on hold then and I have time to look for things.

I don't particularly find it to be very annoying and if it's there to create awareness for the extended community I'm all for it.

Being able to dismiss the notification is a good idea though, for those of us already watching the stream or people who are simply not interested. Having the notification in the menu regardless would also be prevalent.

I don't mind the notification, but I do wish it was easy to dismiss or maybe just less intrusive. Maybe a simple smaller sort of icon at the top of the screen you can click on that is one color when a live stream is available and another color when there are no streams.

My 2 cents, and totally my opinion: when I sit down to play a game, I couldn't care less who's twitching while I'm playing. A scroll window on the side of the main start menu would work well imo.

This is exactly my point. I'm already playing/trying to record something i'm doing, I don't care what people are streaming at this point. But Kris, I am more than happy for these notifications to be in the menus (where I might actually click them if I'm interested in the title of the stream or the person streaming).
