Welcome to Hawkeye Black Labs

Black Labs - General Focus
Black Labs blocks are Hawkeye blocks, meant to be visually and thematically seamless with vanilla Hawkeye. However, Black Labs focuses on broadening and expanding the capabilities of the corp. After all, the power of your weapons means little if you can't maneuver, fuel, or protect them. To that end, Black Labs focuses support technology as well as weapons. Very importantly, it is my goal that, while being powerful and unique, the blocks from Black Labs should feel seamless with the base game. There are certainly some end-game blocks, but at no point should any of my blocks be so powerful as to render the vanilla game content obsolete.

Black Labs Weapons
Black Labs focuses on directed energy weapons (that generally have a near future scifi vibe). The biggest category here being Railguns, but it includes a few other exotic weapons as well. As a rule, Black Labs does not make conventional guns. Most Black Labs weapons CONSUME ENERGY in exchange for some kind of powerful projectile performance.

Railguns - all Black Labs railguns have the following
  • Shield piercing - my railguns entirely ignore shields
  • Extreme velocity- faster than anything in vanilla by 4x or 5x. In fact, each railgun has code specifically to assist the game's collision detection at these projectile speeds. This makes them perfect snipers.
  • Zero projectile droop - gravity does not affect these projectiles. While this helps with line-of-sight accuracy, you cannot shoot over obstacles.
  • AOE impact damage - my railguns apply their full damage to every block in a small bubble upon impact
  • Unique VFX
  • Energy Consumption per shot - 1 energy per damage point for rotating guns and 0.5 energy per damage point for fixed guns. Make sure you tech has the energy infrastructure to support these!
  • Extended Targeting Range

Thread Purpose
I will be posting Black Labs blocks in this thread. Feel free to post bug reports or balance feedback on specific blocks here. However, please keep the thread clear of general discussion so other players can easily find new Black Labs content. If you'd like to offer new ideas, show Black Labs techs, submit requests, or discuss Black Labs as a concept, please use this thread or find me on discord.

Commissions
I may take commissions for custom blocks if the requested block fits Black Lab's theme or sparks my interest. Please feel free to make requests - with the understanding that I may or may not make it. DM me, post on the whiteboarding thread, or find me in the discord modding channel to make a request. Disclaimer: being impolite/demanding will guarantee that I ignore the request.

Other Notes
Special thanks to @Rafs , @WhitePaw2002 , @Legionite, @Potato and others for help getting me started modding. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Please feel free to tinker with or copy code from these blocks. However, please do not re-use art assets or models without my permission.

[Edit]: I'm repurposing this post for more block sets.

Hawkeye Black Labs Lore:

An offshoot of Hawkeye, Black Labs was formed out of a disagreement between an R&D engineer and the corporate leadership. The engineer believed that, while Hawkeye's arsenal of weapons was quite strong, their supporting technology was beginning to lag too far behind their competitors. Leadership disagreed, content to rest in the power of their guns and the reputation they had built.

In his off hours, he built and developed a suite of new armor blocks in secret. When they were finished, he presented them to his leadership and made them this bet: They could have the designs for free, but if they were profitable, Hawkeye leadership would have to give him his own fully funded R&D lab. However, the lab must be completely free of the burdens of Hawkeye's bureaucracy and it's shareholders, and the lab members should be able to work on any project they wanted without interference. With some persuasion, the corporate leadership agreed, seeing it as a relatively low risk bet. If the engineer was wrong, they still gained new armor designs, if he was right, then his original point should be taken to heart and they could capitalize the inventions of his new lab.

So the armor designs were put into production, and to the surprise of many, they were quite successful. The engineer had won his bet, so Hawkeye officially sanctioned and funded the creation of Hawkeye Black Labs.

Armored Window - A 1x1x2 window which blends seamlessly with the hawkeye armor panels. You'll find this in the "accessories" section.

I requested this in suggestions some time ago, but have since just added it myself. It adds a nice visual effect for Hawkeye and can be used in a variety of creative ways. It lights up at night like a cab. (Fyi, day/night light transitions are a bit bugged at the moment, it's not the block, it's TT)

Cascade AM1500 Prop -

A slightly more powerful turbine similar to the Twister Prop. It is meant to be stacked in columns to form engines that look visually clean. It is roughly 30% more powerful, but also slightly heavier and more expensive.

Hawkeye Cascade AM2500 Jet Turbine

This block is a powerhouse. It's a massive 3x3x4 prop engine (as a prop, it requires no fuel) and offering unparalleled thrust. I focused it on airplanes, meaning that while it has a great deal of forward thrust, it offers no reverse thrust, so pair it with other blocks for on-the-ground maneuvering. It was designed to fit in-line with the smaller Cascade AM1500 props for long, powerful engines. Please give your thoughts if you try it!

Hawkeye Power and Fuel gauges - 1x1x1 blocks with 6 APs and stats similar to an HE One block. Meant for burying in structure without compromising structural integrity.

Hawkeye Navigation Computer - This 2x1x1 block follows the theme of the gauges by offering maximal APs so it can be buried in a larger structure without compromise. It is a speedometer and an altimeter together in a single block.

Please enjoy!

I am pleased to present one of two blocks that came out of a Lemon Kingdom/Black Labs collaboration project. @Potato designed and developed this magnificent weapon for Black Labs.

This is the Naglfaar 120 MJ Railcannon, made by combining the hawkeye railgun technology with Lemon Kingdom's legendary Knightfall Nuclear Cannon. It does unparalleled damage at extreme range, and can even puncture shields, all while sporting relatively low recoil.

All credit to Potato for this beast. It's gorgeous.

5/11/2020 Update: Bug Fixes - gun can now be painted.
5/14/2020 Update: Balance Changes - gun does 50% less damage, but damage is now applied to every block in a small radius. Will crater large techs, but still vaporize small ones. This brings it thematically in line with other Black Labs railguns.

Very excited to present Black Labs first internally developed weapon, the Fenrir VLS Canister missile. This missile is encapsulated in a launch tube with attachment points on all sides, allowing it to be embedded in the surfaces of techs to create missile batteries. Damage-wise, it sits between the cruise missile and seeker pod, but its large amount of attachment points will no-doubt make it a powerhouse.

Besides offering many APs, the heavy canister adds both mass and explosive protection. The Fenrir missile will not explode upon destruction. Lastly, the missile itself has unparalleled homing capabilities, allowing it to steer to aim even when placed vertically on a tech.

This block was a lot of work for how simple it looks. Probably my level of experience getting in the way, but it's finally polished to a level it can be released. I may tinker with it further, so look for updates. Feedback is welcome.

New weapon available from Black Labs, the Gungnir 64 MJ Railgun. This weapon is based on the HG1 cannon turret chassis, providing similar performance in terms of damage, weight, and HP. However, the principle drawback of the HG1 is its struggles with applying it's high damage. Using railgun technology to counteract this, the Gungnir supports the following improvments:
  • Black Labs Railgun - projectiles travel extremely fast, have no drop, pierce shields, and apply full damage a small impact zone rather than through direct damage or explosions.
  • 2.5x faster turning than the HG1 cannon turret - because Black Labs thinks it's ridiculous to make a turret which can't track enemies.
  • Laser Pointer
However, the consequence of the better damage application is a much longer barrel. The barrel sweeps a larger volume and so the Gungnir is much more constricting to place. It also only can no longer spin fully in a circle, being limited to only the forward arc.

Huge credit to @Potato on this one. The code for this wouldn't have been possible without his expertly annotated LK block code. He also helped me debug a projectile issue during development.

[Update]: This version of the Huginn Antimatter engine is obsolete and has been discontinued. Please see the updated version later in this thread.

This is the Huginn Antimatter Engine. I feel like I'm the only person in the world who uses linear motion engines to build airships, but I've always wanted a more robust, non-hoverbug way to control a tech's altitude. @Rafs floater tanks did a really good job at this, so I decided to combine the functions of the two into a single block. The engine's throttle will add or subtract to the passive buoyancy of the block. As a result, it basically turns your vectored lift into "vectored elevation". Throttling up will make your tech gently ascend to a new altitude, but then you'll stay there. It works fine with regular LMEs, rotors, and adjustment thrusters, but keep in mind that the more of these other blocks there are, the more subtle the Huginn altitude control will be.

A final disclaimer, this block has passive buoyancy. With zero throttle, this block can lift a mass of 10.5.

TL;DR, the Huginn Antimatter Engine is a moderately powerful lift block that also allows true hovering.

Please give it a try and let me know your thoughts!

Requires the Motion Block mod.

[Update]: With the release of Fireflywater's buff blocks and Rafs trailer attachement, individual trailer wheels are no longer necessary. Using the trailer attachment, any tech's wheels can be converted to trailer wheels. As a result, this block has been discontinued and is no longer available.

Next block is a super simple addition which adds some pretty massive functionality to the game...

A big trailer wheel. Good for making trains and trailers. The possibilities are really quite extensive. This wheel is identical to the HE Big Daddy wheel except that passive braking is entirely disabled.

Turns out trailer wheels are very simple to make, so if people want another (Hawkeye) wheel as a trailer wheel, let me know.

New Black Labs block available, the Ymir Wheel. Named after the progenitor giant god from Norse mythology, the Ymir is Hawkeye Black Labs answer to the GC Behemoth and the VEN Titan wheels. It sockets in between them in terms of wheel performance, but is both dramatically heavier and has dramatically more HP. The included armor fills the empty corner gaps and fits seamlessly in your large Hawkeye techs.

New block today. This beast took a lot of work.

This is the Hawkeye Ivaldi 1.4 TW Disruptor. It's a unique weapon that forms a pseudo beam and can maintain powerful sustained damaged. It is fast targeting, fast turning, and is essentially creates an avalanche of energy focused on your target. While powerful, it is meant to feel seamless with vanilla blocks and ends up producing similar DPS to the GeoCorp plasma cutters - though with a much greater projection range. Because of the lack of splash radius, the Ivaldi also struggles by itself against strongly shielded foes, so it should be used as part of a complete weapon loadout for perimeter defense, and defense against fast targets.

Nice and easy today. I'd been meaning to create a smaller prop that competes with the VEN Zero prop, but with a couple key differences.

The result is this, the Cascade JSM 750 Prop. It has the unique property among props in that it has equal thrust in both directions. (Most props suffer significantly in reverse). As a result, it can provide powerful maneuvering capability, functioning both as a prop and as a very powerful 2-way adjustment thruster on large techs.

In the forward direction, it is weaker than the Zero Prop, but in reverse it is stronger. Also, it doesn't have that horrible spin-up toy sound that the venture one does.

I am pleased to present a new set of blocks. Black Labs edition wings. There are three wings in this set.
1. Strato Wing - nearly identical to the spread wing, but with hidden ailerons and a different AP layout. This block is intended solely to cut down on visual spam of hawkeye wings on larger techs. It remove the skeletal look in favor of streamlined, visually continuous wings.
2. Knife Wings - proper jet fighter wings! The wings are ambidextrous (they can be right or left wings) and can be used as rudders. The two versions are with and without ailerons depending on your visual needs.
