The Beam is a very convenient feature for many reason, but I can't deny that I've come to rely on it or even abuse it in many cases.
The main reason for its existence(other than for visibility while building) is to stop us from being flipped of getting beached on a hill, so why don't we have it so it can only be activated when 1.a tech block other than wheels or landing gears is in contact with something 2.outside of combat.
It would be frustrating to get stuck during combat, but it would also give a reason to perhaps design a tech that is immune to those problems, and make it worth something to have weapons like the sonic lance that can flip enemies.
As an alternative during combat, players could only be able to trigger the buildbeam after a 3~5 second chargeup, and have the beam deactivate immediately after the tech is rightside up.
So how about it?
